1. Never put water on burning oil!
This is dangerous and can cause the fire to explode. Water sinks below the oil, turns to steam, and blasts the oil everywhere – basically turning your kitchen into a war zone.
2. Don’t panic (I know, easier said than done)
But seriously, take a breath and assess. Fire doesn’t spread instantly – you do have a few seconds to think. Remember: ghabrana nahi hai.
3. How to put out a pan fire:
Turn off the stove FIRST.
DO NOT throw water.
Use a pot lid or a wet (but not dripping) cloth to smother the flame.
Fire dies without oxygen.
4. Ensure ventilation during winter.
Using gas heaters or stoves in closed rooms can cause CO2 or even CO buildup, which is deadly. Crack a window open!
5. Never pour petrol directly onto a fire.
A friend of mine almost died doing this at a BBQ. Always use a smaller container and pour slowly – and ideally don’t do this at all.
6. Get a fire extinguisher.
They're affordable now and can be a lifesaver. Mount one in your kitchen or hallway.
Even basic knowledge can save lives. Share this with your parents, siblings, and friends – especially those who think they know better because they’re older
