La Quimera - The FPS Trainwreck You Might Still Have Fun With

Hey everyone,

Just finished my first run of La Quimera, and I figured I’d drop some thoughts for anyone considering picking it up—especially now that it’s launched in Early Access instead of its previously scheduled full release.

In short: La Quimera is a janky, unpolished, and often cringe-inducing shooter… but it still kind of works if you go in with the right mindset (and preferably, a couple of buddies in tow).

The setup is classic direct-to-video sci-fi: a dystopian South American city overrun by robots and corporate corruption, complete with gritty power suits and over-the-top chaos. The game tries to be Crysis meets Aliens, but lands closer to something like Tremors 5—cheap, silly, and kind of a mess… but not without its odd charm.

The Good:
The environmental design occasionally impresses. One mission takes you through a “Bone Wall” made of literal human remains—super eerie and surprisingly effective.

You can play most of the campaign in 3-player online co-op, which makes a massive difference. The bad writing and stiff acting suddenly become hilarious with friends, and combat feels way more alive when you’re strategizing together.

Some minor tension during fights comes from ammo scarcity. Having to scavenge adds a bit of pressure that helps move things along.

The Bad:
The dialogue is rough—like AI-generated-from-a-Tarantino-script rough. NPCs shout awkward lines that made me cringe more than once.

The story goes nowhere. Missions end abruptly, characters have nonsensical motivations, and the game wraps up in around 4 hours with zero payoff.

The gunplay is basic, with a rigid loadout system that doesn’t let you experiment much. You’re stuck with either traditional or EM weapons, and there’s not much room to get creative.

Progression and upgrades feel super barebones. Not enough gear to buy, and what’s there isn’t very impactful.

Oh, and money caps mid-mission? Why?

It’s clear La Quimera was launched unfinished—and to be fair, the devs at Reburn are dealing with real-world challenges, being based in Ukraine. So the fact this game exists at all is something to respect. Still, from a gameplay perspective, what’s currently available feels more like a proof of concept than a polished product.

Should You Play It?
If you’re flying solo and expecting a deep FPS with tight mechanics and storytelling, probably not. But if you’ve got a couple of friends, some time to kill, and a love for “so bad it’s fun” gaming sessions, it might just be worth jumping into Nuevo Caracas for an evening of chaotic laughs.

Just… keep your expectations low and your tolerance for bad voice acting high.

Anyone else give this one a try yet? Curious to hear if others had a similar experience or found some hidden gems I missed.
