Dragon Age: The Veilguard Director Reflects on Inquisition's DLC Integration

Dragon Age 3

In a recent interview, Dragon Age: The Veilguard game director, Corinne Busche, touched on a key decision regarding Dragon Age: Inquisition’s final story DLC, Trespasser. During a conversation with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Busche admitted that the Trespasser DLC played such a pivotal role in the storyline that it arguably should have been part of the base game.

Released nine years ago, Trespasser serves as a crucial epilogue to Inquisition, introducing major plot points involving Solas, a fan-favorite character. Solas’ transformation into the Dread Wolf, now the primary antagonist of The Veilguard, was first revealed in this DLC. Without it, players would be left wondering how Solas, initially a knowledgeable ally, evolved into the “destroy the world for the greater good” figure we see today.

Busche emphasized her love for Trespasser, but she acknowledged its role as too central to be relegated to additional content: "Trespasser is so central to the Inquisition story that arguably maybe that should have been part of the base game."

This revelation highlights the challenge that The Veilguard faces as the fourth installment in the Dragon Age series. With its predecessor’s last main title released a decade ago, and major plot developments locked behind DLC, players unfamiliar with the expanded lore might feel disoriented as they re-enter the world of Thedas.

However, Busche reassured fans that The Veilguard is intended to offer a more complete experience: "We wanted to make it the most complete, out-of-the-box package we possibly could—from the player experience to the narrative—everything else."

This approach contrasts with previous entries like Dragon Age II, whose Legacy DLC introduced Corypheus, the main villain of Inquisition. Busche's team aims to ensure that The Veilguard won’t rely on post-launch content to tie up loose narrative threads.

As for future DLC plans for The Veilguard, Busche remained tight-lipped. While she didn’t rule out the possibility of downloadable content, her primary focus is making sure that the base game is as strong and comprehensive as possible. Fans can only hope that if additional content is released, it will enrich the experience rather than serve as a critical missing puzzle piece.

For those eager to dive into The Veilguard, a little homework might be required. If you missed Trespasser, now might be the time to revisit it to fully understand the transformation of Solas and the broader implications for Thedas' future.

In a world where video game storylines are increasingly complex, integrating essential plotlines into core games is becoming more crucial than ever. The Veilguard looks set to break that cycle and deliver a narrative that stands on its own from day one.
